What did our founding fathers mean when they wrote all those high-minded words about freedom? In playwright Timberlake Wertenbaker's "Jefferson's Garden", two characters straddle the line between the founders' good intentions and reality. During the tumultuous founding of the United States, Christian, a Quaker, is desperate to join the revolution and fight for freedom despite his pacifist beliefs. Susannah, a slave, is tempted to fight for the British, who have promised to set her free after the war. When the two cross paths, the contradictions inherent in "a nation conceived in liberty" are brought into harsh light. As Christian and Susannah meet figures like Thomas Jefferson, George Mason and Sally Hemings, they uncover the compromises our founders made, compromises that still echo today. "Jefferson's Garden" is a timely meditation on the realities of freedom of America at Ford's Theatre in Washington, D.C. [less-]

Mae is a sweet-natured woman with just a little baggage -- a $600 million inheritance. When her womanizing boyfriend Henry dallies with her protective aunt, the world seems too much for her. Both women become the object of ridicule and scandal -- but Henry has a plan to win the heiress back. In the lush and opulent land inhabited by the Hamptons' one percent, where money and status determine everything, can love conquer all? Freely adapted by Theresa Rebeck (co-creator of the hit TV show "Smash" and Broadway's "Seminar" and "Mauritius") from William Congreve's classic comedy of manners, "The Way of the World" is a sparklingly witty physical comedy illuminating the foibles of the upper class. Pulitzer and Tony-winning playwright Tony Kushner ("Angels in America", "Lincoln") set this 1985 drama in early-1930s Germany, where a bohemian actress and her friends try to grapple with the implications of Hitler's rise to power. "A Bright Room Called Day" also intersperses scenes of an American woman living in 1980s New York, who's dealing with a similar set of concerns about Ronald Reagan and the rise of conservatism. St. Mark's Players bring this ever-timely work about citizenship, resistance and complicity to the stage at their DC church. [less-]

The provocative new drama "The Dog Must Die", by The Highwood Theatre's own Madison Middleton, transports you to a world that is uninhabitable -- where concrete columns have formed above ground to house and save society. The conflict that ensues not only challenges the conceptions of humanity and humans' ties to the environment, but forces you to examine the dark, primordial nature within all of us. [less-]
