In 1993, Digable Planets dropped their debut album "Reachin' (A New Refutation of Time and Space)" and left fans of backpack rap reeling. The trio of Ishmael "Butterfly" Butler and former Howard students Mary Ann "Ladybug Mecca" Vieira and Craig "Doodlebug" Irving sampled heavily from Art Blakey for their inescapable hit "Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat)," turning hip-hop heads on to hidden jazz tracks. One Grammy and a second jazz-infused album later and Digable Planets had rap lovers digging in crates for albums by the likes of Herbie Hancock, Roy Ayers and The Last Poets. Throughout the '00s, the group branched out to other projects -- including Butler's abstract duo Shabazz Palaces and Vieira's kid's hip-hop collaboration with Prince Paul and members of Jurassic 5 and The Roots. Now, you can see all three creamy spies together again in concert at D.C.'s Howard Theatre. [less-]

The conversation that ensues begins a fascinating dialogue that covers what it means to be guilty and innocent as well as the existence of a higher power. CulturalDC brings TBD Immersive's world premiere of "In Cabaret We Trust" to the Blind Whino SW Arts Club. This interactive theatrical experience explores the ties between Weimar Republic-era Berlin and, nearly a century later, what could be DC's future. Set in the 2020s, the cabaret is fighting to stay alive in the capital of the populist-controlled Republic. Congress has revoked DC's Home Rule, and an ultra-conservative lesbian senator now controls the city, which she regards as little more than a filthy, liberal swamp. Under increasing pressure from her constituents to shut down the cabaret, the senator has chosen tonight to make her big move. You're invited to join the Resistance as fire-breathers, aerialists, burlesquers, graffiti artists and more perform throughout the 15,000 square-foot space -- which happens to be a desanctified church with an upstairs and downstairs ready and waiting for you to explore. Part rallying cry, part group hug, "Rise Up!" is an artistic response to the life and times we live in. Over inauguration weekend in 2017, Washington Improv Theater presented a politically-minded barrage of improv shows called "Rise Up!" That cathartic, eye-opening and raw experience stirred up something in DC's improv community, and WIT is thrilled to present this three-week revisitation of politically-inspired performances. "Rise Up!" explores all the ways the personal really is political, and vice versa. Check it out at DC Arts Center. [less-]

Iconic blues singer Bessie Smith's life was as large and outrageous as her talent. Live it with her as "The Devil's Music: The Life and Blues of Bessie Smith" takes you back to a 1937 Memphis "buffet flat" where the partying, laughter and bawdiness reach a crescendo after Bessie and her band are turned away by a whites-only theater. Starring Miche Braden, reprising the role she originated off-Broadway, the musical is packed with a trove of Bessie's all-time hits, including "I Ain't Got Nobody," "St. Louis Blues" and "Tain't Nobody's Bizness If I Do." Get rowdy with a musical legend when Mosaic Theater Company's production of "The Devil's Music" comes to D.C.'s Atlas Performing Arts Center. [less-]

You probably know the meme of the cartoon dog surrounded by flames and declaring: "This is fine." But you might not know this classic work that may as well have inspired it. Mild-mannered Mr. Biederman tries to live a blameless life, refusing to acknowledge evil of any kind -- even as the world around him burns. The facade comes crashing down when he allows two smooth-talking guests to move in to his home and they start filling his attic with petrol drums. Part moral fable and part black farce, Alistair Beaton's "The Arsonists" is an elegant, witty translation of Max Frisch's 1958 absurdist comedy "The Firebugs", which was inspired by the Communist takeover of Czechoslovakia in 1948 and satirizes the way in which people can be manipulated into accommodating their own destruction. If you've ever wanted to see Barack Obama sing a show tune, Donald Trump sing a rock song and Vladimir Putin dance shirtless, this is the show for you. The Steps' stage show features numerous song parodies and skits, and the cast even includes some former Congressional staffers, whose firsthand experience helps make the jokes zing that much more. Theater flourished in England during the time of William Shakespeare, but just as popular were the ballads and art songs that served as a soundtrack to the high dramas and low comedies of the time. "An English Garden" is a fertile mix of Elizabethan era tunes -- some associated with Shakespeare and his company and others from later plays -- paired with lively instrumental pieces fit for nobles and groundlings alike. Soprano Emily Noel and a selection of period instruments including fiddles, lutes and citterns bring the music of Elizabethan theater to life in this concert at the Folger Theatre in Washington, DC.
