Think of ''Art in Heat,'' the new exhibit featuring works by 18 emerging and established D.C.-area artists as a pre-release party for the upcoming Fringe Festival. Curated by Scott Brooks, the exhibit, at the Warehouse Arts Complex (1021 7th St. NW), includes works by five gay artists -- Margaret Dowell, Linas Garsys, Albert Schweitzer, Alan Defibaugh, as well as Brooks himself, who will unveil a stunning new painting, ''Royally Ducked.'' The exhibit opens June 30 at 7 p.m. with a public reception and remains on display through July 30. On the pages that follow, we take a look at what comprises the painted lives of ''Art in Heat's'' five gay and lesbian contributors.
