WE NEED YOU TO BECOME A FILMMAKER
Monday, Oct. 21, 7 p.m.
JCC Theatre, $9

The battle cry for lesbians to take up movie cameras sounds
forth perhaps louder than intended through the festival's choice to repeat Changing Room (

), a documentary from
last year's local filmmakers' program. The fleeting look at the women behind
the drag king personas Johnny Kat and Duncan -- as well as related gender
identity issues raised by “boy drag” -- isn't nearly so engaging the second time
around.
On the other hand,
I'd take a repeat of Changing Room
anytime if something new in its place had to be as ridiculously tedious as the
half-hour Pretty Ladies: a
super8explosion (
), an overlong exercise in craft that shows the
filmmaker's appreciation of myriad cinematic styles, but too little wit and
sense of pacing to make it bearable.
With 21 (see listing for Tuesday, Oct. 22, 6 p.m., JCC Theatre) and Ladies Tea (not screened). -- JP
