CRITIC'S PICK!
by Kristina Campbell
CHEERS TO THE IRISH With Goldfish Memory, they've managed to make a film that really offers something for everyone along the sexuality spectrum. It'd be impossible to characterize this as a lesbian or a gay male movie or, for that matter, neither. The relationships span the Kinsey scale.
The plot twists are a bit reminiscent of an 85-minute Seinfeld episode, but are more controlled and less contrived than that sitcom of yore tended to be. Set in Dublin, with fantastic footage of the city's skyline and streets, the movie features a killer soundtrack, an outstanding cast and complex, well-developed characters who are likeable when they're supposed to be, and always realistic and human. With any luck we'll be seeing more of the actors in this movie on this side of the pond.
One of the many hearts of the movie is the friendship between a gay man, Red, and his best friend Angie, a lesbian TV journalist -- both are beautiful and their pursuits keep us riveted while shenanigans galore unfold around them.
The more avid (and optimistic) Ani DiFranco fans out there may at first glance think that Goldfish Memory is a movie about a certain Righteous Babe, but it isn't. Turns out Ani's not the only one to wax artistic about piscine amnesia.
