IT'S POSSIBLE THAT a lot in Sévigné gets lost in translation -- the film takes place in Barcelona and is mostly in Spanish with subtitles -- there's a bit of English dialog, although it's not clear why. The story is about a playwright (Marta Balletbň-Coll, also the film's writer/director) who's penning a script revolving around a character named Madame Sévigné, and she meets up with an actor/director named Júlia (the lovely Anna Azcona) who becomes interested in bringing the play to the stage.

Júlia is, meanwhile, involved with (married to?) Gerardo, a theater critic who alternately describes himself as a bastard and a son of a bitch. Gerardo (artfully portrayed by Josep Maria Pou) thinks Júlia's involvement with the play is a bad idea, that she's putting her career too much at risk, but something about openly lesbian playwright Marina is intriguing to her. Also, the play is about a mother-daughter relationship, and Júlia lost a daughter 12 years earlier. As these things go, Marina is crazy in love with Júlia and before long Júlia is having racy dreams about Marina. In the process of working closely together to bring the Sévigné story to the stage, they draft a moving story of their own.
