The Capital Pride Alliance has announced that the search is on for an executive director to plan, manage and execute Capital Pride 2009, in what will be CPA's first paid position.
''We're looking for somebody who has a tremendous amount of energy, has great organizational skills, is able to deal with the public, and with all of the many, many people who go into producing Capital Pride,'' says Bernie Delia, a CPA board member. ''Someone who can handle all of those, sometimes conflicting voices, at the same time.''
Delia confirms that CPA has received several résumés for this part-time position, but could not comment on the salary range CPA plans to offer. The deadline to apply for the executive director position is 5 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 1. CPA will announce its pick within six weeks after that date, with the aim of filling the position by sometime in March.
The role of the executive director differs from that of Michael Lutz, president of CPA's board, in that it requires managing the annual Capital Pride festival, parade and other related events. Lutz, as president, does not oversee those myriad details, but leads the all-volunteer board.
''I think we've probably explained and said over the last few months that because this is a transition year, many of us on the board are taking on roles to put on the Pride events,'' Delia says, adding that the executive director will take over those responsibilities.
The Whitman-Walker Clinic, after managing Capital Pride for about a decade -- first with One in Ten, then exclusively -- in March 2008 chose the volunteer-driven Capital Pride Alliance to inherit the annual June event immediately following the close of Capital Pride 2008. The week of events constituting this year's 34th annual Capital Pride -- begun in 1972, but not recurring annually till 1975, according to the Rainbow History Project -- and marking the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall Inn riots in New York, is scheduled for June 5 to 14.
