A look at the making of the four 2011 Pride Guide covers

Without people, there is no Pride. That was the guiding thought this year as we put together our ideas for the cover of this 13th edition of the official Pride Guide magazine. And what better way than to reflect our community in all its lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender glory? But how do you fit an entire, diverse and vibrant community on one magazine cover? We couldn't. So we put them on four covers. You may recognize some of our ... [Read]

International singer-songwriter Bettina Schelker plays for her biggest U.S. audience yet at Capital Pride

It might be a little puzzling that Bettina Schelker wrote a song called ''The Honeymoon is Over'' upon marrying the love of her life. But there's an explanation. A very good one. You see, says the lesbian singer-songwriter, the catchy tune is not about her relationship. ''The funny thing is when I found the love of my life, I became a political songwriter,'' says Schelker. ''Before, it was about relationships and I wrote a lot of songs about love and ... [Read]

Female impersonator Venus D Lite is crazy for Madonna

Here's an interesting fact: Adam Guerra has devoted so much of his life to drag and impersonating women, he only just bought his first bottle of men's cologne. ''Believe it or not, I've never done that in my whole life,'' says the 27-year-old, whose nom de drag is Venus D Lite. ''A lot of my boy life the last 10 years was compromised.'' But Guerra isn't just any drag queen. The Los Angeles native is arguably the nation's leading Madonna ... [Read]

Mama's Family

The folk-rock duo Mama's Black Sheep are looking forward to ''pickin' and a grinnin''' at Capital Pride

Ashland Miller and Laura Cerulli both feel like the black sheep of their respective families. ''Neither of our mothers feels that way, oddly enough,'' says Miller. ''[But] each of us has one older sibling, and both of them are in the six-figures, with the big house and all that.'' Not Miller and Cerulli. ''We're still [just] pickin' and a grinnin' in the beer joint, as my father likes to put it,'' says Miller. The guitarist Miller and drummer Cerulli have ... [Read]

D.C.'s homegrown ''jazz/hip-pop'' duo the Lost Bois aims to make playful queer music

''A lot of female emcees and rappers [are] extra-hard and extra-serious and violent,'' says Be Steadwell, who goes by the nickname B. Steady in the jazz/''hip-pop'' act the Lost Bois. Instead, ''we kind of embrace this fun, poppy, silly side.'' B. Steady formed the Lost Bois with A.O. in late 2009, seeing a need for playful queer music. ''There's so much bad music -- there was really no music that we connected to in terms of content, or form.'' The ... [Read]

After three years dancing on the festival stage, Jonathan Bascope is primed for his singing debut

This year will be 24-year-old Jonathan Bascope's third year performing at the Capital Pride Festival. But this year also marks a first for the Northern Virginia native: He will not only be dancing with the DC Cowboys, he will have a ''coming out'' of his own -- as a singer, taking to the festival mainstage on Sunday afternoon. Bascope's path to singing came through his dancing. ''I got into the DC Cowboys a couple years ago,'' he says. ''Last year, ... [Read]

Mo Show

Lil' Mo is ready to give love to the crowd at the Capital Pride Festival

''In all the years, and all the people that I've worked with,'' Missy Elliott recently told Lil' Mo, ''no one has ever done a tribute to me.'' Hip hop superstar Elliott called Lil' Mo to personally thank her after hearing Mo's new mixtape. Mo sings her heart out giving props to Elliott on the track ''Big Sister.'' ''A lot of times we wait until somebody is gone,'' says Lil' Mo. ''We don't give them their flowers while they're still here. ... [Read]

Or twirl a diamond necklace during the 2001 film's ''Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend'' number? If so, Capital Pride has your ticket. The ''Moulin Rouge! Meet Your Committee

Education & Cultural Events committee reaches out with an invitation to diversity

The old-school axiom told us that behind every great man, there is a great woman. Let's brush that off to get with the times, because in the case of May Sifuentes and Stephanie Ayers, behind one great committee chair, there is her great sub-committee chair and partner. Sifuentes is the first-time chair of Capital Pride's 2011 Education & Cultural Events committee. Ayers, her partner, heads the women's events subcommittee. And they – along with all the committee members they serve ... [Read]
