Is it as fun working for comedian Chelsea Handler as it would appear?
“Oh for sure,” Fortune Feimster tells Metro Weekly. “We’re all lucky because she’s created a really tight-knit group, and all of us get along and we hang out. We make each other laugh everyday.”
As noted in a profile in this week’s Metro Weekly, the openly gay Feimster has been a fulltime staff writer since the turn
of 2011 for Handler’s entertaining talk show Chelsea Lately on the E! Network. Feimster is also naturally part of the cast on the “show about the show” After Lately. Plus, she’s working to develop TV shows for Handler’s production company, including a pilot that ABC recently bought. “Hopefully I’ll keep writing more TV pilots because I really want to follow in Chelsea’s footsteps and be on the producer side of things,” she says.
With all that on her plate, Feimster somehow still finds time to ply the standup trade. This Friday, July 12, and Saturday, July 13, Feimster makes her debut at the Arlington Cinema and Drafthouse. “I’m really excited because I’ve actually never performed in the D.C./Virginia area,” she says. When asked what audiences can expect, Feimster, who grew up in the storytelling-rich South, says: “It really is just like fun storytelling, I interact with the audience a lot…I don’t take myself very seriously and so I try to bring out that silliness in everybody else.”
Feimster especially likes performing on college campuses, and for gay groups, where “I talk about being comfortable with yourself and coming out. Just being another support system for them…I like inspiring other people to follow their dreams cause I finally got to follow mine.”
Fortune Feimster performs Friday, July 12, at 11:55 p.m., and Saturday, July 13, at 10 p.m., at Arlington Cinema N Drafthouse, 2903 Columbia Pike, Arlington. Tickets are $10 to $20. Call 703-486-2345 or visit arlingtondrafthouse.com.
For a taste of her humor, you just gotta check out her impersonation of a chunky Hooters waitress full of "voluptuosity" named Darlene Witherspoon, aka "World Champion Ping Pong Hooters Shosoter."
