The Log Cabin Republicans held its national dinner on Sept. 22 at the Capitol Hill Club, where the group honored Sen. John Cornyn and Rep. Pete Sessions, and hosted other GOP elected officials including, Rep. Anh ''Joseph'' Cao (R-La.), Representative Charles Djou (R-Hawaii), Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.). LCR executive director R. Clarke Cooper tells Metro Weekly why he believes its important to build support for pro-equality Republicans by working with other Republican officials who may not support LGBT issues.
''We're only going to endorse pro-equality Republicans. So, they're helping raise money to get Republicans who are good on ENDA, on repeal of 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell,' and on marriage equality. Even though Cornyn and Sessions are not good on ENDA, repeal or marriage equality, they're actually helping us raise money for Republicans who are."
Alex Nicholson of Servicemembers United told the crowd: ''I've taken a lot of flak for doing this the past couple of days. Those of you who've seen me -- those few of you in the room who watch MSNBC -- all over the liberal media saying, 'This is not the fault of Susan Collins. This is not the fault of Olympia Snow. This is not the fault of Dick Luger. They were there. They wanted to support us. They were going to support us. But Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid made the vote impossible.''
