	<title>Musical Wizardry: Emil de Cou will conduct the orchestra while The Wizard of Oz screens at Wolf Trap</title>

Concert: There&#39;s this amazing detail in sounds and colors and orchestrations that you just really don&#39;t hear in the movie theater anymore&#44;&#39;&#39; says the National Symphony Orchestra&#39;s Emil de Cou of the 1939 classic&#44; The Wizard of Oz&#46; But beyond Harold Arlen&#39;s famous tunes&#44; especially &#39;&#39;Over The Rainbow&#44;&#39;&#39; chances are you don&#39;t remember much of the Oz score&#46; &#39;&#39;It&#39;s very easy to not even notice it that much&#44;&#39;&#39; says de Cou&#44; who serves as the NSO at Wolf Trap Festival Conductor&#46; Because of the old technology used in recording&#44; a viewer can&#39;t fully appreciate the score watching the movie now &#45;&#45; even on a good sound system&#46; Except&#44; that is&#44; every few years when de Cou conducts the NSO as the film is projected on stage&#46; He&#39;ll do that for the third time next Friday&#44; July 24&#46; &#39;&#39;Wizard of Oz&#39;&#39; at Wolf Trap &#39;&#39;It&#39;s hard because the orchestra can&#39;t hear the singing&#44;&#39;&#39; says de Cou&#46; &#39;&#39;If you&#39;re off by even as much as half a second&#44; it sounds horrible&#46;&#39;&#39; ... 	<title>Dark Victory: The Gay Men&#39;s Chorus of Washington present a gripping&#44; vital new work</title>

Concert: &#39;&#39;I didn&#39;t know what was happening &#45;&#45; I thought he was having a mid&#45;life crisis or something&#44;&#39;&#39; says composer Michael Shaieb of a close friend and writing partner who was never available to work&#46; Turns out his friend was dealing with meth addiction&#46; The experience informed Through A Glass&#44; Darkly&#44; a composition Shaieb had been commissioned to write a month before his friend&#39;s admission&#44; when Shaieb knew little about the issue&#46; &#39;&#39;It blew my mind&#44;&#39;&#39; says Shaieb&#46; &#39;&#39;All this time I thought I was just taking a project on&#44; a commission for a piece that I could learn about&#46;&#39;&#39; The Gay Men&#39;s Chorus of Washington performs Shaieb&#39;s unusual&#44; edgy 45&#45;minute piece as its annual pride show this weekend&#46; Through A Glass&#44; Darkly focuses on &#39;&#39;one guy&#39;s descent to the bottom&#39;&#39; of partying with crystal meth and the frustrated&#44; worried boyfriend he&#39;s left behind at home&#46; Originally commissioned by Minnesota&#39;s Twin Cities Gay Men&#39;s Chorus&#44; choruses in Miami&#44; Philadelphia and San Diego have also signed on to stage it&#46; Michael Shaieb The piece is unlike anything else in the chorus movement&#46; It&#39;s more theatrical&#44; a reflection of Shaieb&#39;s background&#44; which includes musical&#45;theater compositions written with his boyfriend of 10 years&#44; Brent Lord&#46; The piece also incorporates club music into its more traditional choral repertoire&#46; The 47&#45;year&#45;old composer credits the Moody Blues&#39; 1967 album Days of Future Passed&#44; which mixed orchestral music with classic rock&#44; for convincing him the unconventional mix could work&#46;  ... Concert: Jil Aigrot Jil Aigrot has become known for singing as Edith Piaf&#46; So perfect is her Piaf&#44; she was tapped to voice the singing portions of the 2007 biopic&#44; La Vie en Rose&#46; But Aigrot says her life is little like that of the late French legend&#44; known for hits including &#39;&#39;Non&#44; Je Ne Regrette Rien&#39;&#39; and &#39;&#39;La Foule&#46;&#39;&#39; &#39;&#39;Piaf was troubled&#44; and I&#39;m not troubled&#44;&#39;&#39; says Aigrot&#44; quickly adding&#44; &#39;&#39;Well&#44; when I&#39;m on stage and I have to speak English to the audience&#44; then yes&#44; I am troubled&#46;&#39;&#39; Aigrot&#44; who was born in Algeria but grew up and still resides in Cannes&#44; France&#44; is currently on her first tour of the U&#46;S&#46; She&#39;s promoting her debut album&#44; Words of Love&#44; an homage to Piaf released last year&#46;  ... Concert: Jeff Buhrman knows his gay ABCs &#45;&#45; knows them well&#46; And he&#39;ll help the Gay Men&#39;s Chorus of Washington recite them at everything gAy to Z&#44; this weekend&#39;s annual spring concert&#46; &#39;&#39;The idea came about because GLBT people of all generations don&#39;t know all there is about what&#39;s happened in the last 40 years of the GLBT movement&#44;&#39;&#39; says Buhrman&#44; a 23&#45;year veteran with the chorus and its current artistic director&#46; &#39;&#39;&#91;We want&#93; to educate in an entertaining way&#46;&#39;&#39; The specific goal was to help budding gays develop a better appreciation of GLBT history&#46; And to further that goal&#44; Friday&#39;s performance is free to students&#44; their parents and educators&#46; GMCW In fact&#44; with GMCW&#44; the &#39;&#39;A&#39;&#39; stands for ambition&#46; Just two months ago&#44; the chorus made history performing at President Obama&#39;s Inaugural concert&#46; Along with new executive director David Jobin&#44; Buhrman is hard at work developing three productions for the 2010&#45;2011 season&#44; which will mark the chorus&#39;s 30th year as a performing&#45;arts group&#46;  ... Concert: What comes to mind when you think of human warmth&#63; That&#39;s the question Robert Convery asked members of the Lesbian and Gay Chorus of Washington to answer&#46; Convery then used the responses to weave together inspirations from nine different poets&#44; including Langston Hughes and Walt Whitman&#44; ending up with a song titled &#39;&#39;Under the Greenwood Tree&#46;&#39;&#39; It&#39;s a piece commissioned by LGCW and the centerpiece of the group&#39;s upcoming 25th Anniversary Concert this weekend&#46; &#39;&#39;We&#39;re doing new pieces&#44; old pieces&#44; and a piece that features a solo from every single chorister&#44;&#39;&#39; says Musical Director Paul Heins of the concert&#44; which includes about 40 GLBT and straight singers from the D&#46;C&#46; area&#46; The evening kicks off with &#39;&#39;Sing&#39;&#39; and will include audience and chorus favorites such as &#39;&#39;Everything Possible&#39;&#39; by Fred Small&#46; But with the inclusion of &#39;&#39;Under the Greenwood Tree&#39;&#39; and other new material&#44; Heins says he wouldn&#39;t necessarily call the show a &#39;&#39;Greatest Hits&#39;&#39; performance&#46;  ...
