Do not go to Fabrice Cazenueve’s absorbing and honest coming out film for the shot of teenage boys cavorting naked in the shower. The scene lasts all but three seconds. Get your jollies elsewhere.
Do see You’ll Get Over It, however, if you’re in the mood for a warm, thoughtful, and, yes, frequently sexually charged movie about a 17-year-old inadvertently outed by another gay student and who must undergo the usual trials and tribulations — perplexed parents, suddenly hostile schoolmates, heartbroken girlfriend — before emerging in full command of his gay self.
We’ve seen this story innumerable times, yet in the hands of Cazenueve, it feels refreshed, largely due to a intelligent, sensitive performance by Julien Baumgartner as Vincent, the vastly popular, handsome star swimmer who wrongly believes he has everything to lose by being honest about his sexuality.
You’ll Get Over It was originally made for French television, but the quality is as rich as anything you’d seen in the cinema. It’s the type of film custom-built for a festival like Reel Affirmations: something you’re not likely to see anywhere else, but which leaves you feeling uplifted and powerfully affirmed. — RS
