Mission: Coordinate and promote the sport of tennis within the Washington metropolitan gay and lesbian community.

Number of Members: Approximately 225
How to Join: Fill out a membership application on the group’s web site at www.capital-tennis.org. Dues are $36 a year.
Background: “I have been playing [tennis] since I was 11 years-old,” says Michael Balady, vice president of the Capital Tennis Association (CTA). So, it was only natural that when, in 1998, Balady relocated to Washington, he quickly turned his attention to finding a place where he could pursue his tennis ambitions. He found CTA in a local paper and promptly signed up for a tournament. “[The group] is a wonderful avenue for people who have a common interest and for those who want to become friends because of that interest.” Those interests are what Balady says bonds CTA together, adding with a laugh, “We do things besides tennis — although our spouses don’t think so.”

Next Event: Summer League Walk-up Doubles at East Potomac Park Tennis Center, 1090 Ohio Drive SW, this and every Sunday. Play begins at 10 a.m., although participants are encouraged to come 30 minutes early to assure a walk-up spot. Cost is $5 for CTA members and $7 for non-members.
