ORGANIZATIONAL MISSION: Founded in 1999 to promote and provide a forum for golf camaraderie for gay, lesbian and bisexual people regardless of faith, ethnicity, race, age or ability.
NUMBER OF MEMBERS: 81
ACTIVITIES: Members meet every weekend from April till November for recreational golf, tournaments or picnics.
HOW TO JOIN: Those interested are invited to join the group for a trial outing. For location, send query to info@lambdalinks.org. Seasonal dues are $25.
BACKGROUND: Dee Marrara, president of Lambda Links, has enjoyed golf for 15 years. Three years ago, she went looking for a new golfing outlet. “I entered ‘gay golf’ into a search engine,” she says. What came back was Lambda Links. “I was glad it was in the area!,” Marrara laughs, explaining that it was the sole group she found.
Today, Marrara says her presidential duties take up plenty of time off the green. Nevertheless, she says, “I get in a lot of golf. I play almost every weekend the group plays.” She cautions, however, that golf can be a fairly expensive sport. “The golf courses where we play have greens fees that run from $35 to $100,” say says. But the price also includes camaraderie. “We’re a pretty laid-back group,” Marrara offers. “Many of us socialize and stay around after the golf for a Coke or a beer.”
