Roughly 100 people gathered Saturday afternoon, Jan. 29, at Titan, for Brother, Help Thyself’s annual grants reception. In all, the all-volunteer, Washington-Baltimore organization awarded $91,655 to 27 organizations. On a somber note, the reception was dedicated to the memory of Billy Collison, a board member and former BHT vice president, who died suddenly in January.
Most financial grants fell into two categories: either Medford Fund grants for purchasing equipment, or Van Der Karr grants for HIV/AIDS prevention or caring for people with HIV/AIDS. BHT awarded the largest Medford grant ($7,500) to the Lesbian and Gay Community Center of Baltimore. The largest Van Der Karr grant ($6,400) went to Damien Ministries.
Separately, BHT awarded $2,340 from specially earmarked funds to Pediatric HIV/AIDS Care. Three other recipients were also selected for special recognition. BHT presented the Anthony Bachrach Award for Community Service to Peter Lloyd. The group’s George Dotson Business Award for outstanding community service went to Baltimore’s Central Station/Spike complex. And the Founders Award, recognizing the group that accomplishes the most with the fewest resources, went to Washington’s PETS-D.C.
