Lesbian rock band, Tegan and Sara, to play at DC's 9:30 club
Another indie-rock act might rebel at being lumped with and compared to Avril Lavigne or Ashlee Simpson. But not Tegan and Sara.

”We’re like, ‘Oh well, there are worse things to be compared to,”’ Tegan Quin says. ”Avril Lavigne, she’s a girl who’s worked pretty much every day since she put her first record out.”
So have Tegan and Sara Quin, twin lesbians who front their eponymous Canadian band. They started recording and touring right out of high school in Calgary, Alberta. Seven years and four albums later, they’ve built a loyal following for their tight vocal harmonies, strong melodies and playful pop sensibility. And their most recent record, last fall’s fabulously catchy and endlessly entertaining So Jealous, has tripled the sales of their previous outings.
And while some may hear faint echoes of Lavigne, So Jealous is far more steeped in New Wave.
”The Cars, The Police — those were bands that made us love music,” says Tegan, 24, citing two of the many New Wave bands, favorites of their parents, that influenced them. ”We’re never going to make a record that sounds as great as a Police record.” But that doesn’t mean they can’t try, or come awfully close.
”We were really focused on [So Jealous] in expanding our sound and in expanding our ability to cross genres,” Tegan says, referring to how their once folk-rock-oriented music has become ”poppier” with each successive album. And they’ve seen results.
”I don’t feel like we’re losing our audience as we go along. I feel like it’s the same people coming out and then this whole new audience is joining them.”
