Gay Democratic club charts its course
At the regular monthly meeting of the Gertrude Stein Democratic Club, among the most prominent gay and lesbian political clubs in Washington, held Monday, Feb. 19, the group laid out its 2008 endorsement schedule and set some goals for the year.
According to Stein president Mario Acosta-Vélez, at the group’s May 12 meeting, the plan is to make endorsements for City Council seats in Wards 2 and 7, as well as an endorsement for the District’s congressional representative. At the June 9 meeting, the club will make endorsements in the Ward 4 and At-Large Council races. Acosta-Vélez says the club has not yet decided whether it will make endorsements for Advisory Neighborhood Council races. The District’s congressional and Council primaries will be held Sept. 9. The general election is Nov. 4.
Other plans for 2008, says Acosta-Vélez, include implementing a series of ”Ward House Meetings,” in which Stein Club members will host meetings between Council members from their respective wards and their Stein Club constituents; a new focus on ensuring that all D.C. wards are well represented among the clubs members; and greater involvement for Stein Club members both in the 2008 presidential campaign and in D.C. legislative issues.
