Phyllis Lyon, 83, speaking to her lesbian partner, Del Martin, 87. The couple are to be legally married Monday in California. Lyon and Martin are founders of the first national lesbian organization, Daughters of Bilitis, and have been together for 55 years. The couple was previously the first marriage of 4,000 same-sex weddings that were performed by Mayor Gavin Newsom in 2004, but the legality of those ceremonies was soon overturned by California courts. “Four years ago, when they agreed to be married, it was in equal parts to support the mayor and to support the idea that lesbians and gay people formed committed relationships and should have those relationships respected….
