Stein Club presents annual honors
Extending the celebration of the just-ended Democratic National Convention — and not likely to worry about missing its Republican counterpart, Sept. 1 to 4 — the Gertrude Stein Democratic Club will celebrate the club’s 32nd Anniversary and Leadership Awards on Wednesday, Sept. 3, at the Women’s National Democratic Club.
This year, the Stein Club, one of the District’s most influential political clubs, will honor three individuals and two groups.
City Councilmember Phil Mendelson (D-At large) is being honored with the group’s Wanda Alston Democratic Service Award, named for the local activist and former director of the mayor’s Office of LGBT Affairs, who was slain in 2005.
The Heil-Balin Community Service Award marking volunteer efforts on behalf of the local GLBT community will go to Clark Ray, director of the D.C. Department of Parks and Recreation.
The third honor, the Justice Award, goes to two recipients: Lynne Brown, publisher of the Washington Blade; and Us Helping Us, specializing in HIV/AIDS prevention and related services for gay or bisexual black men. The award recognizes contributions made at an organizational level toward advancing GLBT equality nationally.
The club’s newest award, the Richard Rausch Equality Award, named for the late activist who died in 2007 and who was crucial to the Stein Club’s growth, will go to the Equality Caucus of the U.S. House of Representatives.
The awards reception will be held at the Women’s National Democratic Club, 1526 New Hampshire Ave. NW, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tickets to the event are $75. For tickets or more information, visit the Stein Club online at www.steindemocrats.org.
