Mass gay wedding no record, but 10 couples get hitched anyway
”There are going to be 30 people that I can say I helped make their day unforgettable…. As an event that’s never really been tried with the GLBT community before, we had no idea how to project what the demand was. But I think that we also have gotten a lot of leads and a lot of people have noticed us as a company.”
Mike Wilkinson, an event planner for the Our Time Has Come wedding event. He had spoken with numerous media outlets (including Metro Weekly) for his plan to break a Guinness Record for group marriages. Talking here with the Washington Post, he remains upbeat despite only having 15 couples scheduled out of the 168+ he had originally hoped for. The Post quotes Michael Crawford and Aisha Mills as saying the notion of a group wedding leaves out a desired sense of intimacy that most gay couples are going to want for their nuptials. AP reports 10 couples took part in the event at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium in downtown Washington, DC. The first legal gay and lesbian marriage took place in the District of Columbia on March 9, 2010. (Washington Post)
