Laura Bush asked former President not to use gay marriage as wedge issue

”In 2004 the social question that animated the campaign was gay marriage. Before the election season had unfolded, I had talked to George about not making gay marriage a significant issue. We have, I reminded him, a number of close friends who are gay or whose children are gay. But at that moment I could never have imagined what path this issue would take and where it would lead.”

From the Daily Beast which has 12 quotes taken from Laura Bush‘s upcoming memoir. The former First Lady is likely referring in part to Dick Cheney’s daughter, Mary, who is an out lesbian who gave birth to at least one child with her female partner, Heather Poe. This brief comment seems a bit at odds with her 2004 statement where she called gay marriage a “shocking issue” and said, ”It’s an issue that people want to talk about and not want the Massachusetts Supreme Court, or the mayor of San Francisco to make their choice for them. I know that’s what the president thinks. I think people ought to have that opportunity to debate it, to think about it, to see what the American people really want to do about the issue.” (The Daily Beast)
