Official US documents to include gay-inclusive term ‘parent’ in addition to ‘mother’ & ‘father’

”Applications for U.S. passports and the redesigned CRBA will also use the title of “parent” as opposed to “mother” and “father.” These improvements are being made to provide a gender neutral description of a child’s parents and in recognition of different types of families.”

Announcement made by the US Department of State regarding Consular Report of Birth Abroad records back on December 22. It was thought by most that this new policy was an attempt to make room for same-sex parents. (State.gov)

However, there has been a second modification of the policy following complaints from the anti-gay Family Research Council who oppose “redefinition of marriage and the family.” According to GovExec.com, the final wording will be: “mother or parent 1” and “father or parent 2.” The site quotes an official in the Bureau of Consular Affairs as saying:

”Secretary Clinton was aware of the importance of the change but not aware of the nitty-gritty details. Once she was made aware, she decided to revise the wording.”
