Prepping Pride

Capital Pride set to reveal 2011 theme, introduce organizers and ask for volunteers at kick-off event

Planning has already started for the 36th annual Capital Pride, returning to Washington June 2-12. And on Thursday, Jan. 20, organizers hope to begin solidifying those plans with an official kick-off meeting, says Scott Lusk, Capital Pride communications director.

”This is where people can come and meet the organizers and also learn how they can volunteer,” he says. ”We’ll also talk about the theme of Pride. We’ll unveil that. Then the committee chairs will introduce themselves, and people can learn if there’s something they would like to become involved in this year.”

Lusk says it will be a feat putting together an event even bigger than last year’s, which attracted more than 250,000 people and featured recently out country singer Chely Wright. But, he says, it’s possible.

”I think every year Pride keeps getting better and better because the LGBT community in D.C. continues to grow and be more and more proud and participate more and more,” Lusk says. ”It’s significant that it’s the 36th year, because it shows not only that D.C. is a very friendly town, but also that we have an LGBT population that is continuing to grow.”

Capital Pride’s official kick-off meeting, Jan. 20, runs 6:30-8:30 p.m. at The Center, 1318 U St. NW. capitalpride.org.
