No, it’s not a new SyFy movie. There really are mummies in Richmond, Va. As a matter of fact, the mummified remains of Nesperennub, a temple priest who lived 3,000 years ago, is the centerpiece of an exclusive U.S. presentation of a major international touring exhibition of ancient Egyptian antiquities from the British Museum’s world famous collection.
Mummy: Secrets of the Tomb is at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts through March 11, 2012. The 7000-square-foot exhibition of more than 100 ancient artifacts is brought to life and contextualized by a 3D film exploring the life, mummification and afterlife of the Egyptian priest. In addition to the remains of Nesperennub, there are other human and animal mummies, jewelry, canopic jars, monumental stone sarcophagi, statuary, a gilded mask and bronze and stone sculpture.
Tickets are free for VMFA members, children 6 and under, and active-duty military personnel and their immediate families; $15 for adults; and $12 for seniors 65+, students with ID and youth ages 7–17.
