The American Film Institute’s Silver Theatre takes advantage of a “Marilyn Monroe Retrospective” film series to screen this 1950 Bette Davis classic, which has had impressive lasting cultural relevance — and which really everyone should see at some point. Monroe was only a bit player in the film, though you can’t forget her turn as the flirty party date to a jaded theater critic, marvelously portrayed by George Sanders. The focus, though, is on a fading A-list actress (Davis) as she’s usurped in popularity by the duplicitous starlet she takes under her wing, played by Anne Baxter. “Fasten your seat belts, it’s going to be a bumpy night” is just one of many famous lines in the film. It’s a truly magnificent piece of work, all around. Monday, Sept. 3, at 6:45 a.m., and Thursday, Sept. 6, at 6:45 p.m. AFI Silver Theatre, 8633 Colesville Road, Silver Spring. Tickets are $11.50. Call 301-495-6720 or visit afi.com/Silver.
