Schwarzenegger says he performed two gay wedding ceremonies
Arnold Schwarzenegger, former Governor of California and mega-movie star, spoke openly with “60 Minutes” this Sunday. He told the interviewer, Lesley Stahl, that his mother once consulted a doctor over his obsession with male bodybuilders. As an adolescent, Schwarznegger had adorned his room with photos of stripped-down, muscled-up men instead of girls:
“I don’t know if she thought it was gay, she thought that I was — there was something off. Catch it early.”
On the show’s website, a video shows Stahl asking Schwarznegger about gay and lesbian marriage. While he reiterated his personal view that that “marriage” is between a man and a woman, he revealed that he was the officiant for two of his office staffers. One was an assistant, and one was his chief of staff, Susan Kennedy:
“I performed the wedding… in the Governor’s office…. I don’t have to ‘be for gay marriage.’ I’m for that she gets the kind of wedding, and the kind of ceremony, that I had when I got married to Maria [Shriver]. That she happens to love a woman,… it doesn’t make any difference. She should still have her ceremony.”
One of the most contentious court cases regarding same-sex marriage in California bore his name: Perry vs. Schwarzenegger. It has been renamed Perry vs. Brown.
Today, Schwarznegger is promoting his new auto-biography, “Total Recall: My Unbelievably True Life Story.” He is also starring in the movie “The Expendables 2,” and has several other upcoming films in production.
