With warm temperatures and clear skies, it was a perfect summer day yesterday in Rehoboth Beach, Del. But many vacationers skipped the surf and sand to attend the annual Independence Day Pool Party at 6 Futcher Drive.
The theme of this year’s party was “Winter Wonderland,” and DJ Mike Reimer was melting the ice with hot summer hits to entertain the more than 600 guests who helped raise approximately $10,000 for CAMP Rehoboth LGBT community center.
Hosted by partners Mike Deflavia and Tony Sowers and a network of friends, the party has become an important event for CAMP Rehoboth that uses the funds to support the general operations of the community center.
“We are really in awe of Mike, Tony and all the others who share in the summer fun at 6 Futcher,” said Steve Elkins, executive director of CAMP Rehoboth. “There is no reason for them to be so generous with raising funds for CAMP Rehoboth at their pool party other than their appreciation of what a great and inclusive community we have [in Rehoboth].”
According to Elkins, the pool party is not only important for the money it raises but it is an opportunity to present the programs of CAMP Rehoboth to a much wider audience that might not normally be encountered by the organization.
In addition to its newsletter, health promotions and many community programs and services, CAMP Rehoboth played a significant role in supporting Delaware’s recent approval of same-sex marriage and the prohibition of gender-identity discrimination.
CAMP Rehoboth’s Sundance fundraiser will be held Labor Day weekend, Aug. 31 and Sept. 1.
Rehoboth Beach ranks as one of the top LGBT beach destinations in the world.
