Russian LGBT Network urges no Olympic boycott
“Do not boycott the Olympics – boycott homophobia! Stand in solidarity with people in Russia and bring LGBT pride and values of human rights and freedoms to the Games in Sochi!”
– From a July 30 statement issued by the Russian LGBT Network via Facebook, calling on LGBT activists and allies not to advocate for a boycott of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. A recently passed law banning “homosexual propaganda” in the country, along with chilling reports of increasing violence against the Russian LGBT community, have prompted calls for boycotts of Russian vodka, a requests by the Human Rights Campaign that NBC use its broadcast of the Winter Games to bring attention to the anti-gay law, and other efforts.
