Just in time for your weekend, Metro Weekly has assembled a Spotify playlist of the leading contenders as Song of Summer 2013. That is, at least according to our polling of prominent local DJs asking them to rank their Top 5 Songs of Summer, part of Metro Weekly’s Summer Music Issue 2013.
This being a popularity contest, I compiled the playlist weighted to start with those tunes that were picked multiple times by the 10 DJs who submitted selections, as well as all those that topped individual DJ charts. Those tunes that are the most obscure, or at least were picked by only one DJ, bring up the rear. For variety’s sake, I opted to kick it off with Tiesto’s new Club Life Remix of “I Love It” by Icona Pop — because don’t you know the year-old original version by heart already? I mean, it (along with other remixes) was just included in our Capital Pride Sampler last month.
There are a few omissions from the summer sampler, songs that are not — yet, anyway — on Spotify. Most notable among these are both Beyonce’s jaunty “Grown Woman” and Kylie Minogue’s edgy “Skirt,” since neither tune has been officially released as singles. So you’ll have to settle for YouTube clips.
