She Still Bop: Cyndi Lauper at Warner Tonight

Thumbnail image for Screen Shot 2013-11-13 at 11.53.04 AM.pngIt’s hard to believe, but the LGBT champion and pop icon Cyndi Lauper turned 60 this year, and her solo debut album She’s So Unusual turned 30. (Chris Gerard recently put together a great career retrospective.) But instead of merely basking in the accomplishments of all that — as well as her recent Best Musical Score Tony Award for the powerfully affirming, pop/rock-oriented Kinky Boots — Lauper has been on tour, playing through that 1983 album in its entirety. That means revisiting many of the songs that made you fall in love with her in the first place — obviously “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun,” but also the sweet ballads “Time After Time” and “All Through The Night” and her cover of Prince’s “When You Were Mine,” which provoked silly tsk-tsking because she stuck with Prince’s feminine pronouns. (Is Lauper a lesbian? Is that what she meant by girls having fun?) And then there was her disguised pro-masturbation anthem “She Bop,” a guitar- and percussive-heavy early club hit that just a few years ago, at a True Colors stop at DAR Constitution Hall, she still performed — and the crowd reacted — with the sense of wild, youthful abandon that the song demands.

She’s also bringing along the all-female rock band Hunter Valentine, a PhaseFest regular that gained wider exposure last year as stars of Showtime’s The Real L Word.

Tonight, Nov. 13, at 8 p.m. Warner Theatre, 513 13th St. NW. Tickets are $33 to $73. Call 202-783-4000 or visit warnertheatredc.com
