1999
No. 1 July 31 through Aug. 28
Pop diva Christina Aguilera landed a smash hit early on in her career with the funky, playfully sexy “Genie in a Bottle.” Although she was only 18 at the time, the song’s fresh, slinky pop vibe made it the jam of the summer of 1999, and it spent 5 weeks at No. 1. She’d score a second No. 1 from her self-titled debut album when “What a Girl Wants” topped the charts later in the year.
2000
No. 1 April 8 through June 10
The turn of the millennium turned out an unlikely pop hero. Santana had already closed out 1999 with 10 straight weeks at No. 1 with his smoldering collaboration with Rob Thomas, “Smooth” — and that song would spend two more weeks at the top after the start of the new year. Santana proved his career renaissance was no fluke, owning the winter and the spring and summer as well. His collaboration with The Product G&B, the sultry “Maria Maria,” spent 10 weeks in a row at No. 1 before being dislodged by Aaliyah’s “Try Again.”
2001
No. 1 June 2 through June 30
Powerhouse vocalist Christina Aguilera was a hot commodity by the summer of 2001, and her collaboration with Lil’ Kim, Mya and Pink on Patti LaBelle’s all-time classic “Lady Marmalade” proved a massive success. The high-energy update latched on to No. 1 for a month during the summer of 2001, anchoring the soundtrack to the completely unwatchable exercise in narcissism-run-amok, Moulin Rogue.
2002
No. 1 June 29 through Aug. 10
Produced by The Neptunes, Texas-based rapper Nelly’s career catapulted through the roof thanks to this sweat-drenched classic, which spent most of the summer at No. 1. Nelly would perform the rare feat of knocking himself out of the top spot, as his collaboration with Kelly Rowland, “Dilemma,” moved to No. 1 on Aug. 17 and didn’t decide to leave until after 10 weeks.
