— North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper (D.), speaking with the Associated Press. Cooper said if he was governor he would veto two proposed pieces of legislation making their way through the state legislature, both of which contain anti-gay rhetoric. The first would allow magistrates and court clerks to refuse to perform civil marriages due to religious beliefs, while the other is similar to “religious freedom” laws, like that in Indiana.
Cooper , who is widely expected to run for Governor, defended the state’s same-sex marriage ban until a federal appeals court struck it down, at which point he said there was no point putting additional legal effort into maintaining it.
