Popeye’s buddy J. Wellington Wimpy is not the only fan of hamburgers. The beef industry estimates that 50 billion burgers are consumed in the U.S. each year. That’s about three burgers a week for the average American. Still, you won’t likely find area restaurants falling for the “I’ll gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today” line, but you just might find yourself searching the cushions for some extra coins to take advantage of the bonanza of special hamburger promotions taking place around town in honor of National Burger Day this Thursday, May 28.
On the bustling U Street corridor, Ulah Bistro is celebrating America’s favorite sandwich with 25% off its classic Bistro Burger, made with a half pound of ground Angus beef and served on a brioche bun with leaf lettuce and tomato. It’s normally priced at $12 with the option of adding fries or a salad for an extra $2 and is available during lunch and dinner.
Diners can also enjoy 25% off on Station 4’s Smoked Kobe-Style Burger. Located in the Southwest Waterfront neighborhood, Station 4’s executive chef Orlando Amaro makes his mouthwatering burger with Snake River Farm wagyu and serves it on a brioche bun with stilton blue cheese, grilled onions, Boston lettuce, tomato and mayonnaise and a side of duck fat fries. Normally priced at $20, it’s served exclusively at dinner.
At North Bethesda’s Del Frisco’s Grille, the Chesapeake Prime Burger is available until the end of May. The brainchild of chef Cody Lynch, the mountainous burger is served on pretzel bread and topped with layers of jumbo lump crab, beer battered onion rings, honey mustard, and a roasted garlic and onion jam. The cost is $21 and it’s available during brunch, lunch and dinner.
One day or even one month is not enough time to celebrate hamburgers at each of Cafe Deluxe’s five locations. The chain is offering a special collection of six burgers, including the Porter Burger with grilled Angus beef topped with provolone, beer-braised onions, bacon and Porter beer-infused mayo on an onion poppy seed bun. There’s also the patriotically-named Red, White & Blue Burger, featuring grilled Angus beef loaded with blue cheese, red onion marmalade, bacon, and horseradish mayo on a toasted sesame seed bun, courtesy Uptown Bakery. Burgers range in price from $12.95 to $14.95 and are available only weekdays during lunch, except Wednesdays when they’re available all day and are half price.
