Task Force: Release all LGBT immigrants from detention centers

National organization hits Obama administration over risk faced by LGBT undocumented immigrants

“It is crystal clear that the most vulnerable cannot be kept safe in these detention centers, that is why we are urging the Administration to release all undocumented LGBTQ immigrants once and for all.”

Carey— Rea Carey, executive director of the National LGBTQ Task Force. Noting that the month of June is recognized as Immigrant Heritage Month, the Task Force called out what it sees as flaws in the country’s immigration system, in particular the plight of undocumented immigrants. The Task Force also decried the treatment of women, children and LGBT people in detention centers as they await a decision of whether they will be allowed to stay or deported back to their country of origin, noting that LGBT people at these detention centers are 15 times more likely than other detainees to experience physical assault and rape.
