To no one’s surprise, Roland Emmerich’s much-maligned Stonewall failed spectacularly at this weekend’s box office.
According to Indiewire, Stonewall released in 129 theaters but was only able to draw $112,414 in tickets — or a measly $871 per theater. For comparison, the Emily Blunt-starring Sicario raked in over $1.7 million, despite showing in just 59 theaters. That’s $30,000 per theater.
Emmerich will surely be red-faced after this weekend’s results, not least because he directed, produced and helped fund the retelling of the 1969 Stonewall riots. Accused of whitewashing history and diluting the film to appeal to straight audiences — as well as being threatened by boycotts and waves of negative press and reviews — it’s perhaps not entirely shocking that Stonewall‘s grosses should be so miserly.
