“I’m not worried. I’m free. I feel like there is nothing to hide, and there is nothing left to fear.”
—Trey Pearson, Everyday Sunday lead singer, in a personal letter published in (614) Magazine. “I had never before admitted to myself that I was gay, let alone to anyone else. I never wanted to be gay,” Pearson said.
The singer had suppressed his identity for two decades. “I tried my whole life to be straight,” he said, adding that he’d hoped to live out a traditional heterosexual life with his wife of eight years and two children. While Pearson called his announcement “freeing,” he describes losing people close to him and being isolated by many church members.
“There is absolutely no conflict with accepting who I am and following Jesus,” Pearson stated. The singer also took to twitter to make a statement about his religion and sexuality.
To my fans and friends: I’m finally being honest with myself. I love you all. https://t.co/bfP5CXpuCx pic.twitter.com/0EmwHiljrz

While Pearson remains confident in his faith, he criticizes the culture of shame that pervades many Christian churches.
“It is hard to see white, male pastors instill this fear of ignorance” he said. “That’s what creates the bubble so many people hate about church: the lack of honesty when it comes to questions about faith.”
Pearson will continue to sing with Everyday Sunday and is scheduled to perform at the Wild Goose Christian Festival in July.
