Donald Trump isn’t known for his tact and subtlety, so it should come as little surprise that he managed to turn a mass shooting into a chance to pat himself on the back.
After 50 people were murdered in a shooting at an LGBT nightclub in Orlando, Trump initially took to Twitter to express his condolences.
Really bad shooting in Orlando. Police investigating possible terrorism. Many people dead and wounded.

Horrific incident in FL. Praying for all the victims & their families. When will this stop? When will we get tough, smart & vigilant?
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 12, 2016
However, amid reports that the shooter had connections to so-called Islamic State, Trump returned to Twitter to congratulate himself over his previous comments on Islamic extremism and calls for a ban on travel bans for Muslims.
Appreciate the congrats for being right on radical Islamic terrorism, I don’t want congrats, I want toughness & vigilance. We must be smart!

Needless to say, Trump finding time to inflate his own importance during a time of tragedy didn’t go down well with Twitter.
.@realDonaldTrump FYI: turning worst mass shooting in US history into a Trump humble brag isn’t smart. It’s childish, arrogant, thoughtless.

@realDonaldTrump you are pathetic

Once again, Donald, you have shown why you cannot lead us. 50 people are dead, and you bask in congratulations. https://t.co/pUN7ceAff7

.@realDonaldTrump You’re the only person in America who would or could “appreciate the congrats” while families mourn 50 dead.
— Chris Sacca (@sacca) June 12, 2016
.@realDonaldTrump You’re congratulating yourself because 50 people are dead this morning in a horrific tragedy?
— Meghan McCain (@MeghanMcCain) June 12, 2016
Translating Trump: “20 people are dead. 42 people are injured. But of course, 1st, it’s all about Me. Me. Me.” Ugh. https://t.co/TDNOqtztvY

This narcissistic man baby can’t help but try to make a national tragedy about how many congratulations he’s due. https://t.co/gTcIGIjRqT
