“In less than three weeks an organization was created that was able to mobilize an entire country against an initiative of the president.”

Juan Dabdoub Giacomán, founder of Mexican Council for the Family told a Catholic News Agency. It was a response to President Enrique Peña Nieto’s announcement last month that he would pursue reforms to allow for “the right to enter into marriage without any discrimination.”

Peña Nieto’s recognition of LGBT rights on the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia was met with backlash from the country’s strong ‘Catholic values’ lobby. The lobby has played an important role in the President’s major losses in elections this week. The President’s party has lost seven governorship elections to social conservatives, which may have negative impacts on the 2018 Presidential elections in Mexico.

Since Peña Nieto’s comments, PinkNews reports that more than one thousand Catholic and conservative groups have come together to form the National Front for the Family. The group aims to punish the President for his pro-gay rights stance.

“Mexico has spoken at the ballot box; the affront against the family has cost the president and the party that supports him dearly,” National Front for the Family spokesman Carlos Alberto Ramírez Ambríz stated. “This weekend the family won! It was an historic event for Mexico; everything indicates that society is waking up and we’re not going to go on allowing a corrupt political system to continue governing.”
