It’s hard to remember to blink during Stranger Inside, the compelling story of young Treasure Lee, who gets herself incarcerated in hopes of meeting the mother she’s never known. When Treasure finally comes face to face with Brownie, who’s serving a life sentence for murder, she learns that it’s not all as simple as calling someone Mom.

This HBO Films production directed by Cheryl Dunye (Watermelon Woman) is expertly crafted from start to finish, and boasts big names like Rain Phoenix in a pivotal role as the confused and misguided Kit and R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe with a producer credit. But the real strength here lies in the talent and tension between Yolonda Ross as Treasure and Davenia McFadden as Brownie. The two strike a careful harmony between the hard, dangerous and competitive world behind bars and the emotional vulnerability two women can show each other (and sometimes exploit) in such a setting. — KC
