The Human Rights Campaign Foundation has released two ads that will air in Mississippi designed to familiarize people with fellow Southerners who belong to the LGBTQ community.
The ads will air in the Northeast Mississippi media market, including the cities of Tupelo, Columbus, and Starkville. They are the latest two additions to HRC’s #LoveYourNeighbor campaign that has produced more than 70 ads, both for television and the Web, over the past year, in the hope of fostering greater understanding of and tolerance for LGBTQ people.
The campaign, which is partially funded with a grant from Toyota — which has a manufacturing plant in the Magnolia State — is a storytelling project that shares the experiences of LGBTQ people and their allies in the South, particularly focusing on Alabama, Arkansas, and Mississippi.
“Through HRC’s work in the South, we have found that the most effective way to change hearts and minds is simply to share our stories,” HRC Mississippi State Director Rob Hill said in a statement announcing the two latest ads. “We’re thrilled to bring the #LoveYourNeighbor campaign to the airwaves in Northeast Mississippi, where this multi-state storytelling project began. … We hope that these stories of LGBTQ people living in the South will reach a broad audience in Northeast Mississippi, many of whom may not have had an opportunity to hear stories like these before.”
One of the two newest ads focuses on Kaleb, a transgender man who works for Toyota in Mississippi, and his partner, Carrie. The other includes a number of clips of subjects from past #LoveYourNeighbor videos.
