When she began bartending eight years ago, Jo McDaniel never would have predicted that she would someday be competing in the world’s largest LGBT bartender competition. However, come this summer, that is exactly where she will be.
McDaniel, who works at Cobalt, was one of five local bartenders who competed last week in the Washington, D.C., stop of the annual Stoli Key West Cocktail Classic held at Nellie’s Sports Bar.
She bested her peers with a combination of herĀ gregarious personality and a creative bright blue StoliĀ Blueberi based cocktail. Finishing in second-place was Frank Parrish of Nellie’s, third-place was Antonio Troia of Kona Grill, and rounding out the lineup were Adel Lammari of Perry’s and Morgan Swinehart of Mission Dupont.
Judging this year’s regional competition were Sacha Adams, a local celebrity drag queen; Troy Petenbrink, a contributing writer for Metro Weekly; Josh Pocock, winner of last yearās D.C. competition and bartender at Freddy’s Beach Bar; and Alan Beaubien, president of the Key West Business Guild, which co-sponsors the competition in partnership with Stolichnaya Vodka.
The dozens of attendees who were provided sample of each of the cocktails while being entertained by special drag performances by Sasha Adams and the event’s local host Ba’Naka, were also able to cast their votes for the winner.Ā
“I joined the competition because Stoli is representative of DC’s LGBT community. We are a fun crowd, we are vibrant, and we are alive,” said McDaniel, who is the first female winner of the D.C. competition.

Celebrating its fifth year, the Stoli Key West Cocktail Classic finale will be held June 5 to 11, in Key West. Florida. McDaniel will face-0ff against regional winners from 13 other North American cities.
In addition to competing for theĀ title ofĀ 2018 Stoli Key West Cocktail Classic Champion, she will have the opportunity to win aĀ portion ofĀ $20,000Ā for her favorite hometown charity, the opportunity to serve asĀ Honorary Grand MarshallĀ ofĀ 2018 Key West Pride Parade, aĀ victory celebration/charity check presentation in D.C., and a trip for two to her choice ofĀ Vancouver PrideĀ orĀ San Diego Pride.
āThe Key West Cocktail Classic recognizes the most talented and innovative bartenders in the country, whose spirit-both personally as well as inside the glass-represents these legacies of an island that itself has been a safe space and community center for so long, and a man whose life opened so many closet doors and paved the way for the freedoms we enjoy today,” said Patrik Gallineaux, Stoliās National LGBT Ambassador and Brand Manager. “Without both, the Stoli Key West Cocktail Classic would not exist.”
Grammy Award-winning rapper Doechii will headline the WorldPride closing ceremony on Sunday, June 8.
The bisexual singer's appearance will occur on the second day of the WorldPride DC Street Festival and Concert, expected to draw hundreds of thousands of visitors to Pennsylvania Avenue, in the shadow of the U.S. Capitol.
Admission to the festival and concert is free of charge.
The closing ceremony and concert, which runs concurrently with the Sunday festival from noon to 10 p.m., features a diverse lineup of performers, closing remarks from organizers, and the official passing of the torch to the next WorldPride host city, Amsterdam.
Everybody knows Grindr. "Dating app." "Hookup app." "Social-networking app." It may mean different things to different people, but there is no denying its global impact. According to Grindr, the app reaches more than 14 million users monthly, 80 percent of whom are outside the United States.
That's a heck of a global party. But spend a little time with D.C. resident Steph Niaupari, and you'll quickly learn that there's much more to Grindr than fun and games. There is Grindr for Equality, this year marking its 10th anniversary. The effort notes that in 2023 alone, it "provided more than $1.5 million in direct financial aid to more than 150 LGBTQ+ organizations worldwide." Niaupari is this particular effort's senior manager.
Grammy, Emmy, and Tony Award winner Cynthia Erivo has been announced as a headliner of the WorldPride 2025 Street Festival and Concert.
Erivo, a three-time Oscar nominee who portrayed Elphaba in 2024's blockbuster movie Wicked, and who will reprise the role later this year inĀ Wicked Part 2,Ā frequently uses her platform to uplift diverse voices, champion inclusivity, and promote equity and greater LGBTQ representation and visibility.
Last fall, she was honored at the Human Rights Campaign National Dinner, where she was presented with the organization's National Equality Award.
