Local community members have started at least two GoFundMe pages to raise money for two men who were severely beaten by three suspects near the intersection of 10th and U Streets NW on Sunday morning.
The attack was caught on video, and showed three men in their 20s repeatedly punching, kicking, and stomping on the victims. Witnesses say the men yelled homophobic slurs during the attack.
Both victims — who were identified by Capital Pride as longtime volunteers — were taken to a local hospital and treated for injuries. One was treated for a concussion he received after being knocked unconscious during the attack, and the second was treated for a broken nose and broken teeth.
According to the first GoFundMe page, started by organizers Natalie Denise and Ella Marie, both men are freelancers who will have limited income, and may be saddled with medical and potential legal expenses going forward. Once all the victims’ expenses are paid, the remaining money raised will be donated to a local D.C. LGBTQ organization.
Thus far, the page has raised $6,745 from 83 people since it was put online around 2 p.m. on Tuesday.
A second GoFundMe page has been started specifically for the second victim by members of the CrossFit Praxis community. Thus far, that second page has raise $5,197 from 86 people in one day.
“This attack is a stark reminder that homophobia and anti-gay violence still persists, even in a city as tolerant and welcoming as Washington, D.C.,” page organizers Barrett Lane and James Reeves wrote on behalf of Praxis. “Although our physical gym no longer exists, the Praxis Community remains strong and continues to look after our own. Through this effort, we hope to be able to support Z. through this difficult time, show our strength as a family, and take a stand against homophobia and hate-fueled violence.”
Police are currently trying to determine the identity of, and are searching for, the three suspects in the attack. Anyone with knowledge of the incident can call police at 202-727-9099 or text a tip to MPD’s Text Tip Line at 50411. Crime Solvers of Washington, D.C. is currently offering a reward of up to $1,000 for anyone who provides information that leads to an arrest and indictment in the case.
