‘Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom’ allegedly removed lesbian reference from film

Daniella Pineda said a line identifying her character as lesbian was cut for time

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom reportedly removed a line of dialogue that would have confirmed one of the film’s characters to be lesbian.

Daniella Pineda, who stars as Dr. Zia Rodriguez, told Build in an interview that the line of dialogue did not make the final cut of the film.

“I understood why they cut it — for sake of time,” she said. “It’s me and Chris Pratt and we are in a military vehicle with all of these mercenaries. I look at Chris and am like, ‘Yeah. Square jaw. Good bone structure. Tall. Muscles. I don’t date men, but if I did, it would be you. It would gross me out, but I would do it.'”

In the film, Pineda’s character is a paleo-veterinarian, or dinosaur vet, who works Bryce Dallas Howard’s character Claire at an organization dedicated to saving dinosaurs before a volcanic eruption wipes them out.

“It was cool, because it was a little insight into my character,” she said regarding the axed dialogue.

While the cutting of Pineda’s line is disappointing, it’s also unfortunately in-line with a recent spate of blockbusters editing out or ignoring LGBTQ characterizations.

Marvel in particular has drawn ire for its attitudes towards LGBTQ characters. While Deadpool 2 recently drew praise from GLAAD for its depiction of a lesbian relationship, earlier this year, Black Panther co-writer Joe Robert Cole had to address rumors that Marvel edited out a lesbian romance between two characters, while last year’s Thor: Ragnarok edited out a scene that would have depicted a key character’s bisexuality.

Jurassic World: FallenKingdomis opening Friday and was directed by J.A. Bayona and written by Colin Trevorrow.
