A rainy weekend and a Code Orange security alert didn’t stop the turn-out for this year’s Black Lesbian and Gay Pride Day, with “well over 6,000 people” filling the new Washington Convention Center, according to Earl D. Fowlkes Jr.
“We want to give that airy outdoor feel,” said Fowlkes, president of the BLGPD board, a much easier task given the massive windows in the new center. This was the fourth year the event has been held indoors, and the first in the new center.
While the host hotel for the event reported a number of cancellations due to the security alert, Fowlkes said he knew on Sunday that the day was a success.
“When 702 came on stage, everyone was rushing toward the stage,” he said. “I saw everyone enjoying it and I thought, ‘It worked. We did it.'”
