An Australian study has found that gay, lesbian, and bisexual people are more likely to perpetrate or become the victims of “revenge porn” and other forms of abuse involving sexual photos or videos.
Researchers at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia, polled more than 4,200 people aged 16 to 49, and asked them if they’d secretly taken photos or videos of someone, distributed the images, or threatened to do so.
Based on the study’s findings, 11% of Australians admitted to engaging in some form of image-based sexual abuse over their lifetime.
Behaviors falling under this umbrella include receiving a consensually-shared nude or sexual selfie and sending it onto others without the subject’s consent; covertly filming or photographing someone without their knowledge; and threatening to share or sharing explicit images of another person — including past sexual partners — in an attempt to embarrass or humiliate others.
Another 9% said they had taken nude or sexual photos or videos of someone without their consent, and 6% admitted to distributing such images. This includes instances where people covertly filmed up women’s skirts or down their blouses, reports Perth Now.
“We also now of computer hackers accessing a victim’s webcam and their personal computer files as well as sexual assaults or rapes being filmed,” Nicole Henry, the chief investigator of the study and an associate professor at RMIT University.
In an interesting twist, self-identified victims of these forms of image-based sexual abuse were more likely to admit they were also abusers. Abusers were also more likely to share images of people they knew, including partners, ex-partners, friends, and even relatives, rather than images of strangers.
Men were twice as likely as women to admit to perpetrating revenge porn.
Gay, lesbian, and bisexual respondents were more than twice as likely to admit to taking and threatening to distribute sexual images of another person without their consent, and were 2.5 times more likely to actually distribute them. Additionally, gay and bisexual men were more likely to engage in such behavior than lesbian or bisexual women.
Speaking to Gay Star News, Henry speculated that the higher incidence among sexual minorities could potentially be attributed to the fact that LGB participants were more likely to engage in online dating or sexual selfie-taking behaviors than their straight counterparts.
“It may be that some LGB individuals have more access to opportunities to engage in IBSA behaviors, especially if nude photos are used in user profiles on online dating sites,” she said.
“However, our study did not find that more online daters engage in IBSA compared to non-online daters, so, again, it’s difficult to accurately explain the reason for the higher rate of perpetration among LGB participants in our study.”
She said more research, utilizing a larger sample of people, is needed to investigate reasons why the incidence of revenge porn is higher among sexual minorities.
As instances of image-based sexual abuse have become more prevalent, governments — both abroad and in the United States — have begun passing laws to punish perpetrators of revenge porn. One such law regarding the Australian state of Queensland passed Parliament last week. On the domestic front, 41 states and the District of Columbia have laws punishing forms of image-based sexual abuse.
A gay Holocaust survivor is comparing former President Donald Trump's autocratic tendencies and propaganda tactics to former Nazi leader Adolf Hitler.
With the help of her children and grandchildren, the 88-year-old woman, known as Grandma Elli, was able to familiarize herself with TikTok and start posting observations about the upcoming U.S. presidential election.
"I've been around a long time and seen many crises, but never like this one in our country," she said in her first video. "As far as I can see, there's really only one question to answer as we decide who we want for our next president, and that is: Do we want to continue our democracy, civil liberties, and free elections, or do we want a 'wannabe dictator,' by his own words, who will go after our freedoms one by one, dismantle them, and then take vengeance on all who disagreed with him?"
A California man with neo-Nazi ties convicted of murdering a gay, Jewish University of Pennsylvania student has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Samuel Woodward, 27, was convicted in July for the 2018 fatal stabbing of 19-year-old Blaze Bernstein. He was sentenced last Friday in a Southern California courtroom.
Woodward stabbed the college sophomore, with whom he had attended high school, 28 times in the face and head and buried Bernstein's body in a shallow grave.
During sentencing, Orange County Superior Court Judge Kimberly Menninger said that evidence presented at trial showed Woodward had planned the murder. She refused to override the jury's findings that the crime had been motivated, in part, by Bernstein being gay. She denied Woodward probation, noting that he had not shown any signs of remorse for the crime, which she called a "true tragedy."
Arad Winwin, a model and content creator best known for his work in gay adult films, received backlash on social media for sharing posts expressing support for President-elect Donald Trump and opposition to Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris.
In the run-up to this year's election, the 34-year-old gay man shared various memes attacking Harris, Biden, and Democratic surrogates while championing Trump. He also shared a racist meme questioning Harris's ethnic and racial background.
The day after the election, Winwin shared a post including an image from the Daily Patriot Report.
