The Helen Hayes Awards celebrate Washington, D.C.’s thriving theater scene that is second only to Broadway. Overseen and presented by theatreWashington, this year’s ceremony spotlights 250 nominations competing for a total of 47 awards — plus two special non-competitive honors.
Most fall under one of two main categories: the Hayes, reserved for productions featuring a majority of theater union members, or the Helen, recognizing those with fewer union members and generally produced on a smaller scale.

“I was talking to a couple of homosexuals down in Melbourne, and they were talking to me about listening to Kylie,” John Grant says rather gleefully, clearly relishing this anecdote from his recent tour of Australia. “And I was like, ‘She came and guested at my show at Royal Albert Hall, and came on stage during ‘Glacier.’” The Aussies’ response? “They were just looking at me like I had two heads on my shoulders. They were looking at me like a German Shepherd hearing a weird noise.
“It was really hilarious,” he continues, “because it was just as epic for me as it was for them hearing that.”

"It was in high school that the theater bug hit me," says Miss Kitty. "I started as a singer before, and then, once I got to college, that's when I really started getting into dance." By the time she graduated from college, she notes with a flourish, "you could say became a triple threat."
The local performer's potential to become a triple threat was intimated early on by key officials in the drama department of her alma mater, Catholic University.
"I remember auditioning for a production of Gilbert and Sullivan's The Pirates of Penzance," she says. "They called me back as Ruth, the nursemaid. Many of my classmates and my voice teacher questioned that, I told them, 'No, I'm actually quite elated that they would be willing to call me back to play a female part, because I would feel a lot more comfortable that way."
