Hercules & Love Affair at the Rock and Roll Hotel
Named after the Greek hero and his male travel companion Hylas, the gay Andrew Butler's mixed-gender, mixed-sexuality band Hercules and the Love Affair offers club music smarter than it is silly, rounded out by real horns and strings. It can get a bit too smart, too refined for its own good, but any club connoisseur should take notice. The neo-disco band is expected to release a sophomore album this fall, so expect to hear previews. Tuesday, Aug. 3, at 8:30 p.m. Rock and Roll Hotel, 1353 H St. NE. Tickets are $16 to $18.
