Heterosexual NYC official marries in Connecticut as protest of New York’s gay marriage ban
”If enough people who have somewhat of a profile — not just politicians, but artists and business leaders — start going into Massachusetts or Connecticut and show New York how embarrassing it is that you can’t get a marriage license for same-sex couples, then we will change things.”
Scott M. Stringer, the Manhattan Borough President, speaking with the NY Times this past July. He married his wife Elyse Buxbaum this past weekend in New Haven, Connecticut as a show of solidarity for the lesbian and gay community. Marriages are not legal for same-sex couples in New York state, but are in nearby Connecticut. Buxbaum said her motivation for going out-of-state was because of the terrible feelings she had after telling her lesbian friend the good news about her upcoming wedding. Stringer, 50, is thought to be a NYC mayoral candidate for 2013. (New York Times) (New York Times)
