Director Kevin Smith marries gay ice hockey fans on ABC’s Nightline
“Suddenly, it goes from the 50 people here in this room to potentially the entire world [who get] to hear your wedding. And the more interesting the people are, the better it is. And if you’re getting married here, you’re really interesting…. If you’re getting married in hockey jerseys, and making me wear a referee jersey, and you’re gay, and you’re here, and you’re huge hockey fans, we’re in for a great show.”
Movie director, podcaster, and ordained minister Kevin Smith, telling ABC’s Nightline about his interests in performing weddings at his theater that he has dubbed, “SMarriage at Smodcastle.” Smith also walked through the minute-and-a-half online process to become ordained at the Universal Life Church Monastery. The Nightline broadcast was about celebrities who performed weddings, and it included other gay-friendly stars like Tori Spelling and Kathy Griffin. (ABC News Nightline)
The funny, uncensored marriage of Scott Loudon and Michael Wojtowicz was conducted on February 12, 2011. The hour-long interview can be heard in full at Smith’s online podcast. The couple has been together for 16 years but had not found a ceremony setting that felt right until they found Smodcastle.
Smith’s upcoming Red State, to be released in October, will feature characters allegedly inspired by the anti-gay preacher Fred Phelps who runs the infamous Westboro Baptist Church. Smith claims to have been picketed by the real-life Phelps family, who called him in a press release, “The fag-enabler Kevin Smith.” Smith also made the lesbian-themed 1997 film Chasing Amy, starring Ben Affleck and Jason Lee.
