Basil Twist’s Petrushka at The Shakespeare

Petrushka

The Shakespeare Theatre Company offers a short run of Petrushka, acclaimed puppeteer Basil Twist’s 2001 work of puppetry and magic, a re-imagining of the famous Ballet Russes production, telling the tragic love story of three puppets at a Russian carnival. Nine hidden puppeteers use a combination of Czech and Japanese techniques to bring the characters to life, along with two pianists performing Stravinsky’s original ballet score. The production is the kick-off to a multi-venue Basil Twist Festival in the D.C. area over the next month, also including productions at University of Maryland’s Clarice Smith Center (Symphonie Fantastique), Studio Theatre (Dogugaeshi) and Woolly Mammoth (Arias With A Twist). To March 25. Lansburgh Theatre, 450 7th St. NW. Tickets are $22.50 to $50. Call 202-547-1122 or visit shakespearetheatre.org.
