The Beaded VW Bug heads to the National Museum of the American Indian
Vochol: Huichol Art on Wheels is the grand title for a new glorious installation at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian: A Volkswagen Beetle dressed up in two million colorful glass beads and 35 pounds of fabric and paint by Mexico’s Huichol Indians. Two Huichol families — eight artists in total — devoted more than 9,000 hours on the installation, which transformed a 1990 Beetle into a bright, psychedelic beauty straight out of a Candyland fantasy. The beaded Bug will be on display in the museum’s Potomac Atrium beginning this Tuesday, March 20 and will remain through May 6.
