Vochol: Huichol Art on Wheels is the grand title for a new glorious installation at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian: A Volkswagen Beetle dressed up in two million colorful glass beads and 35 pounds of fabric and paint by Mexico’s Huichol Indians. Two Huichol families — eight artists in total — devoted more than 9,000 hours on the installation, which transformed a 1990 Beetle into a bright, psychedelic beauty straight out of a Candyland fantasy. The beaded Bug will be on display in the museum’s Potomac Atrium beginning this Tuesday, March 20 and will remain through May 6. National Museum of the American Indian, Independence Avenue at 4th Street SW. Call 202-633-1000 or visit nmai.si.edu.
